Wednesday, January 10, 2001 Sun Heiralcl Punta Gorda Herald Page 7 Geneaology DNA Day part of a worldwide program Have you signed up for Genealogy DNA Day? If you haven't, you better get a move on. Time is passing. By the time you read this article, there will be a little less than a month before the big event. And space is becoming more limited as time goes on. Surely, if you find yourself fascinated by the DNA stories you have been reading recently, you will just as surely be inter¬ ested in this new Charlotte County Genealogical Society project. We have discussed it in this article over the past few months, but for those who are just joining our area for their winter vacation, let me explain what it is all about. Genealogy DNA Day is about the opportu¬ nity to place your individual DNA in a gene pool with thou¬ sands of others for the purpose of furthering genealogical research. And, the Society has teamed up with the LDS Family Its AH In the Genes Mary Wilson History Center in Port Charlotte and Brigham Young University in Utah to bring Genealogy DNA Day to Port Charlotte. This is your chance to take part in a comprehensive Molecular Genealogy DNA study, a study that could be of great help to future genealo¬ gists, and one that will eventual¬ ly include 100,000 participants worldwide. You don't have to go to Utah to join in the fun, either. Just plan to be on hand at the Latter Day Saints Family History Center, Quesada and Forrest Nelson Blvds., in Port Charlotte, on Feb. 9, at 9 a.m. What will be the order of the day? You will be treated to a short interesting lecture con¬ cerning the study. You will be asked to fill out a four-genera¬ tion pedigree chart (using a form generated by your comput¬ er or working with one that will be provided to you). A sample of your blood will be taken (about 2 tablespoons) by a licensed nurse/phlebotomist. And finally, you will be asked to sign a consent form in this regard. Don't think your nutri¬ tional needs will be unattended, either. Light refreshments will be served. You can save yourself some confusion on the day of the event by pre-registering now. Registration forms are available at the Port Charlotte Cultural Center Library on Aaron Street, or at the LDS Family History Center at Forrest Nelson and Quesada Blvds., again in Port Charlotte. The latter facility is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, while the Port Charlotte libraiy is open for business any weekday. Sounds worthwhile, but you are still not sure? Call 625-3032 or 627-6646 for more informa¬ tion. Or plan to attend the Charlotte County Genealogical Society meeting next Wednesday, Jan. 17, beginning at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Viscaya and Quesada, Port Charlotte. There will be some¬ one there ready to answer your questions, but, in addition, the program promises to be an inter¬ esting afternoon. Richard Schillinger, former director of the local LDS Family History Center, is slated to discuss the LDS Library Resources and is well qualified to explain the ins and outs of this fabulous resource. So be there. I know I will. Mary Wilson is a past presi¬ dent of the Charlotte County Genealogical Society, the Charlotte Bay Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and of the Jamestowne Society.
