SAWMLLLS STOOD ON BABCOCK RANCH SITE
The headquarters for BabcoCk's Ranch In eastern Charlotte County marks the site where the com¬ munity of Bermont and one of the area's largest sawmills stood for many years. Some of the old foundations can still be seen and the routes of the rail lines used for hauling logs are plainly visible from the air. Like many large firms, the sawmill company owned most of the town and operated the big general store. During the depression years when cash was scarce, the firm Issued Its own scrip. The scrip was used to pay employees and was accepted at the company store and other facilities. Scrip could be exchanged for cash only at the company's discretion.
