This unmailed post card shows a photo of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1896 at the corner of Cross Street (now southbound U.S. 41) and Virginia Avenue in Punta Gorda. The church began in 1892 as the St. James Mission, when Virginia (Mrs. Isaac) Trabue asked Bishop William Gray to organize Episcopal services in the settlement. The site for the church was donated by Albert Gilchrist and construction funds were contributed by Mrs. Samuel Colt. The Colt's son, Caldwell Hart Colt, had drowned in Charlotte Harbor in 1893 and Mrs. Colt also commissioned a stained glass window from the Louis Tiffany Studio as a memorial to her son. The sanctuary served until 1980, when a new building was constructed on Henry Street.
