This undated photo shows the general store building (with upstairs living quarters) built by Mott Willis in 1922 to replace the original store purchased by Willis from Joel Knight in 1912. The concrete blocks used to construct the building were fabricated on site, formed with a mold ordered from the Sears-Roebuck catalog. In later years the structure held the "White Elephant" store, selling used merchandise and recycled building parts, and for a time was the home of the Charlotte Players, an amateur theatrical group. Located on Bayshore Road directly across the street from the Charlotte County Historical Center, the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1997; despite efforts to save it, it was demolished in 1998.
